About

At INE, over $20 million in annual research expenditures power transformative projects in Arctic engineering, climate resilience, and sustainable technologies, creating impactful solutions for Alaska and the world.

From Isotopes to Infrastructure

Alaska Stable Isotope Facility (ASIF)
Specializes in stable isotope analyses, supporting research in fields such as ecology, geology, and environmental science. ASIF’s services are available to researchers and external clients, fostering collaborative scientific endeavors.

Coastal Protection
Partnering with communities to design erosion-resistant infrastructure.

Water Solutions
Advancing treatment technologies for water quality and spill response.

Satellite Imagery Analysis
Processing remote sensing data for ice monitoring and Arctic environmental studies.

Carbon Flux Modeling
Simulating carbon dioxide movement through ecosystems to refine sequestration strategies.

Critical Minerals Research
INE is advancing extraction techniques for rare earth elements critical to renewable energy and defense industries.

Tracking Mercury
Advancing research on mercury risk assessment in communities, improves climate models tracking permafrost-related release, and informs national efforts to reduce exposure in remote regions.

Fresh Eyes on Ice
Connecting Arctic communities through modern ice observation to enhance river ice safety, and flood forecasting.

Advancing Educational Research and Innovation for 40 Years

For four decades, INE has prepared students to go beyond theory. From undergrads to PhDs, students work on real problems, with real materials, in real Alaskan conditions. They gain experience in problem-solving, research design, and lab techniques, and grow through persistence, independence, and adaptability.

Our graduates leave with more than a degree. They leave with a research resume shaped by some of the most remote and demanding environments in the world.
