The impacts of wildfires on water quality

  • Project Student PI: Logan Wieland

Ph.D. student Logan Wieland is researching the impacts of wildfires on water quality in and around the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge.

The Kenai Peninsula has experienced large wildfires in recent years and this is the first study analyzing the impacts of wildfires on surface water quality both within and beyond burn areas.

This study is tracking phosphorous and nitrogen mobilized and redistributed by recent fires to better understand surface water changes in local/ regional ecosystems and drinking water quality.

Field work includes an inter-annual water sampling program across 37 sites, including lakes, rivers, and wetlands.
