Beaver effects in Northwestern Alaska

  • Project Student PI: Sebastian Zavoico

Ph.D. student Sebastian Zavoico investigates the ecological impacts of increased beaver presence in the Arctic on fish and water quality.

This study responds to concerns from local communities that beavers may be adding disease, such as Giardia, to drinking water that was previously considered safe without filtering.

By comparing streams, lakes, and beaver ponds, this research also explores how beavers affect salmon and other species, which in turn could impact subsistence fishing and local economies.
