Recovery of rare earth elements from mine wastewater

  • Project Student PI: Fayzul Kabir (Ph.D. student, Department of Civil, Geological and Environmental Engineering)

This project investigates the biological recovery of rare earth elements (REE) from mining wastewater using microbes. Through microbial metabolism, REEs can become concentrated within microbe cells and this study tests the potential to extract them from these microbes.

This project will contribute significant knowledge to the treatment of highly polluted mining wastewater as well as the recovery of REEs in Alaska for use in valuable products.
