Drinking water quality in Alaskan and Arctic utilidor systems

  • Project Student PI: Md Ibnul Hasan (Ph.D. student, Department of Civil, Geological and Environmental Engineering)

Biofilms form on the pipe-water interface of water distribution systems and account for more than 95% of total bacterial growth in these systems. These biofilms have a negative impact on drinking water quality, particularly in distribution systems that present favorable conditions for microbial growth and biofilm formation due higher temperatures and long residence times.

This project will fill a critical knowledge gap regarding the impact of biofilm growth and drinking water quality in Alaskan utilidors.
