Fire and permafrost effects on boreal forest streams

  • Project Student PI: Jacob Adams (M.S. student, Department of Biology and Wildlife)

Wildfires and/or permafrost thaw can potentially change the chemistry of a stream, such as its nutrient concentration, which in turn can affect how energy is created and used (stream metabolism). Studying the changes in stream metabolism in response to disturbances that are now common in Alaska’s warming climate provides valuable information about stream water quality and biotic activity.
