Project Summary

Registration

First, thank you for your interest in the program! In order to participate we need to know a few things about your data collection team and your location. Please fill out any one of the registration forms on the left. They all have the same information but are in different formats for your convenience. Please use whichever form best suits you. Once you have one of them filled out please email your answers to Katey Walter Anthony.

Lesson Plans

One of the main benefits of participating in PALIMMN is receiving access to prepared lesson plans that will have your data collection team practicing real science. Completing the PALIMMN program will help your students:

  • Learn about methane production in lakes and climate change
  • Survey methane bubbles in the lake ice
  • Build methane bubble traps
  • Collect methane gas from bubble traps on a lake
  • Prepare a spreadsheet with their data

Included in the lesson plan documentation are prepared activities:

  1. Background on climate, lakes and methane emissions (Half an hour)
  2. Building bubble traps (1 hour 15 minutes)
  3. Learning how to collect methane from bubble traps (45 minutes)
  4. Collecting methane from bubble traps on a lake (1 hour 15 minutes minimum)
  5. Surveying methane bubbles on lake ice (If possible and safe. 1 hour — 1 hour 30 minutes)
  6. Filling in the data spreadsheet (45 minutes)

Collecting Data

In order to collect proper data you will need to follow prescribed methods and record particular observations using tape measures, cameras, gps devices, and the forms to the right. You should read through the PALIMMN Data Collection Methods document, plan an area for observation, review lake ice safety, and have your data forms handy before you head out collecting.
