• Field observations during the 2015 breakup on the Sag River
    • Horacio Toniolo, Ph.D.
    • September 25, 2015

During the 2015 Spring breakup, the Dalton Highway, which is the only road to the oil fields located in the northern part of Alaska, was closed to traffic for approximately 3 weeks. It is speculated that the origin of this extraordinary flood event, the first one since the road construction in 1974, was related to the watershed’s extremely wet conditions during last summer. Fieldwork performed by a field crew from the University of Alaska Fairbanks is presented and discussed in this presentation.
