On May 5, 2001, two research teams from the ATLAS Project (Arctic Transitions in the Land-Atmosphere System) arrived in Council, Alaska, to monitor snow melt and peak spring run-off. The team from WERC (Water and Environmental Research Center, University of Alaska, Fairbanks) is primarily responsible for the hydrology, climatology, and watershed snow measurements in the area, while the team from CRREL (Cold Regions Research and Environmental Laboratory, U.S. Army) is responsible for regional snow measurements and characterization. The two teams will remain here until the spring snow melt is complete. This website will be updated frequently directly from the field, with data and photos.
