To conference we will go: WERC and CSC offer student travel grants

Hoping to boost student participation in research meetings and conferences, WERC is working with the new Department of Interior Alaska Climate Science Center (CSC) to offer travel grants to WERC students. The CSC is offering grants specifically to promote student participation in water resources research conferences at regional, state and national levels.

According to an announcement issued by WERC and CSC, approximately 15 travel grants will be awarded, up to $1,200. Priority will be given to graduate or undergraduate students who disseminate research results via oral or poster presentations at selected conferences.

One potential venue is the American Water Resource Association’s Alaska (AWRA) Section meeting in Juneau March 4-8. Another is the Alaska Forum on the Environment in Anchorage Feb. 6-10. All travel should take place between Feb. 1 and Aug. 31, 2012.

To apply submit a one-page request summarizing :

  1. Your rational for attending a specified conference;
  2. The material to be presented;
  3. The relevance to Alaska’s water resource research needs;
  4. And the estimated costs of travel.

A one-page curriculum vitae is also required.

Applications should be submitted via email to William Schnabel weschnabel@alaska.edu, WERC director. Subject of the email should be “CSC-WERC Travel Grant”. Applications are due by 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16.
