INE’s Dave Barnes and IAB’s Mary Beth Leigh will present a free public lecture, “Sulfolane in North Pole’s Groundwater: Movement and Biodegradation Potential,” Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in Schaible Auditorium. Parking on campus is free after 5 p.m.
Professor Barnes will discuss groundwater dynamics in a discontinuous permafrost aquifer, and how the sulfolane appears to be moving through the North Pole aquifer. Barnes’ work is one of only a few studies in this area, and his results are the culmination of more than 10 years of research in the North Star Borough area. Professor Leigh will discuss potential for degradation of the contaminant.
